Director Director Zolnowski immigrated to the United States in 1996 from Poland. He has been the Executive Director of IIMD since 2005. Mr. Zolnowski has demonstrated he has both the personal and professional experience needed to carry out IIMD’s mission. Mr. Zolnowski became a naturalized citizen in 2014. He is well known and trusted throughout Detroit’s immigrant communities. He received his MBA in 2001 from University of Detroit Mercy [UDM] and has twenty years of experience providing organizational management, program development, evaluation and finance. His work has been paramount to integration efforts in the City of Detroit. As a founding member of the city’s first immigration task force, Mr. Zolnowski helped to devise the initial strategic plan which led to outcomes such as creating the Mayoral Office of Immigrant Affairs, Municipal ID program, branding of Banglatown, and expansion of the city’s language access program. He also was instrumental in designing the city’s first refugee resettlement program, which was implemented in 2016. Additionally, Mr. Zolnowski and his community partner, Sufian Nabhan at the Islamic Center of Detroit, implemented the first equitable and integrated community driven development plan in Warrendale, the Warrendale Community Integration Plan [WCIP]. Lastly, Mr. Zolonwski has expansive experience successfully administering multiple federal, state and private grant funded programs. Ms. Holden moved to Detroit from Westminster South Carolina with her family in 1966 in search of employment opportunities. She originally volunteered in IIMD's gift shop in January 2000 and was hired as a full-time staff member in 2001 as a Receptionist/Rental Assistance Coordinator. Prior to working at IIMD, Ms. Holden worked at the Ford Motor Company for 28 years as an Assembly Technician. Juliette has been instrumental in navigating services as she is the first point of contact for IIMD's participants. He received a Master of Science in Nursing in 2003 and is a Michigan state approved occupational trainer. Having over 3 decades of experience in the healthcare industry, including providing emergency services and quality care at local area emergency medical facilities, Mr. Harris has provided leadership development, instruction, and curriculum design to educational and medical facilities throughout the greater metropolitan Detroit area. Alex is a first generation American, as both of her parents are immigrants from Poland. She is trilingual in English, Polish and Spanish, but hopes to learn more languages to be able to better serve the Detroit community! Alex graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA in 2018 with B.A. in Sociology and Psychology and a minor in Spanish with a strong commitment to social justice. After graduating, Alex was a prestigious Fulbright Scholar and English Teaching Assistant at the Universidad de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia. Nada started as a volunteer 1991 and in 1993, she assigned as the coordinator of the Ethnic Enrichment Experiences (EEE) programs. In 2001, Nada became the Global Education Director. Currently, Nada serves as the Cultural Connection Consultant for IIMD. During her career, she designed and developed several educational and recreational programs focused on promoting Global Learning & Cultural Awareness, encouraging participants from preschools to major corporations to “Think Globally and Act Locally”. She has been working with a team of presenters “Cultural Ambassadors”, from 103 Countries, intern students from Michigan educational institutes and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Together they have been on a mission to build bridges of harmony, unity, peace and understanding in the Metropolitan Detroit community. Nada has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was featured in channel 7 as” Person of the Week”, and in Channel 2 as “People We Should Know”. Nada’s story and accomplishment has been presented in many ethnic publications. Taillard, ESL Coordinator and Lead Instructor Steven M. Taillard, IIMD’s ESL Coordinator/Lead Instructor began teaching at IIMD in January 2021. Discovering new places and cultures has been a hobby for Steven. He has been very fortunate to have traveled all over the globe visiting over 25 countries on four continents. In doing so, Steven has found himself living in Spain, Japan, and China and guest lecturing or teaching in many more countries. It was his love of traveling that inspired him to become a teacher. Steven is a former English Language Fellow [ELF] with the US Department of State, stationed in China for two years where he taught at two prestigious national universities in China. As an ELF, Steven also conducted teacher trainings, workshops, and spoke at many international conferences on teaching English as a Second Language throughout East Asia. He earned his MSed Curriculum & Instruction: TESOL from the University of the Southwest, Hobbs NM and a BA in Social Studies, and a Secondary Education certificate from Madonna University, Livonia, MI. Steven has taught a wide range of English classes such as Academic Writing, Reading, Grammar, Oral Communications, Film Literacy, American Culture, and Western Culture at several colleges and universities in the US and in China. Altogether, he has 10 years’ experience teaching ESL, plus another seven years’ experience teaching various other subjects. She speaks and reads/writes Spanish fluently, and can understand basic Portuguese and Italian when spoken quite slowly or written down. She enjoys working at IIMD because of the interactions with people from around the world that have settled in Michigan and the ever-fascinating confluence of law and social work. Sullivan Jr., General Counsel Robert E. Sullivan, Jr. serves as the General Counsel and Director of Career Development for the International Institute. As part of his IIMD duties, he also has recently served as Vice President and President of Hamtramck United Social Services, assisting Michigan’s most ethnically and culturally diverse city, and he also provides professional services to the United Community Family Services (Chaldean American Ladies of Charity), in Troy. The grandson of Irish-Canadian immigrants, he first started at IIMD as a volunteer as a young child, and later served from 1993–2011 as a member of the IIMD Board of Directors and Advisory Council. In preparing for his career as both a city planner and attorney, he obtained a B.A. in political science and a B.A. in sociology from Monteith College (part of Wayne State University), a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, and a Juris Doctor (law) degree from the University of Detroit. He is licensed to practice law in Michigan (since 1984), the District of Columbia (since 1985), and in various federal courts up to and including the U.S. Supreme Court. He practiced as a litigation attorney for 23 years, as a partner with the Detroit law firm of Sullivan, Ward & Bone. He is a nationally certified city planner (AICP), served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Detroit, and served as an Adjunct Professor of History at Macomb College. She joined the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit in 2024, teaching citizenship instruction for lawful permanent residents applying for U.S. naturalization. Ms. Van Loon also teaches English as a Second Language [ESL] to non-native speakers, integrating grammar, syntax, and digital literacy into her culturally competent curriculum. Ms. Van Loon holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish, magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame and a Master’s in Humanities from the University of Chicago. He now supports refugee communities across southeastern Michigan, helping individuals build the skills needed to pursue new economic opportunities in United States. With a broad background in education, business, and community engagement, he brings a wealth of experience in public service, employment services, and cross-cultural communication. Since joining the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit in 2024, Yahya has played a key role in assisting refugees with self-sufficiency and employability plans, ensuring they receive the resources and support needed for economic mobility. His expertise in bilingual communication, program coordination, and client advocacy allows him to provide culturally competent services. Before serving as the RSS Case Manager, Yahya gained extensive experience in both education and executive leadership, both overseas and in the U.S. As Director of the English Department at Sanaa Community College, he supervised and trained faculty, developed curricula and lesson plans, and supported students in building essential language and professional skills. He also served as a university lecturer, teaching subjects such as human resources management, entrepreneurship, public relations, and operations management. Elisa’s career path shifted after taking a grant writing course, where she discovered a new way to combine her education, experience and passion for writing. In her current role, Elisa writes federal, state, and foundation grant proposals. Her awarded grants have supported a wide range of initiatives, including capital projects, barrier removal to employment, workforce development, program capacity building, legal immigration services, financial coaching, English as a Second Language, citizenship preparation, COVID-19 relief, and general operations. His experience also extends internationally—he worked as a social worker in Switzerland, providing critical support to individuals with psychological and cognitive impairments, asylum seekers, and migrant communities. Tori has dedicated her career to organizations serving Latinx and immigrant communities, including over a decade at Immigration Law and Justice Michigan and several years at Migrant Health Promotion, where she led community health programs for migrant farmworkers. His responsibilities include developing individualized case plans, coordinating services such as job training and interview preparation, and providing support in job search activities. He advocates for clients within the employment system and connects them with housing, social services, language classes, and financial literacy programs in partnership with IIMD’s Center for Working Families. Masood also maintains accurate records, coordinates client transportation, and interpretation services across departments, and supports orientation programs to facilitate refugee integration. Masood brings extensive experience in IT, administration, and community support. Prior to joining IIMD, he worked as an IT/Administrative Assistant at DGC International, where he provided hardware, software, and network support, oversaw inventory procedures, and served as an interpreter between the U.S. Army and Afghan staff. He also held IT roles with Chemonics International Inc., the Afghan Women’s Education Center, and other international development organizations, managing networks, software rollouts, staff training, and community outreach. Masood holds diplomas in Information Technology and English Language, and his technical training includes certifications in Windows Server environments, networking, and data communication. He is fluent in English, Pashto, Dari, and Urdu.
