International Institute Centennial Celebration Planning

Celebrating-100-Years-mark-small[1]_1.inlineThe International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit was founded in 1919 in Detroit. In 2019, it will be 100 years old!!!. We are planning early with ideas to help celebrate the 100 years of service to the people of Metro Detroit. A large percentage of Metro Detroiters have directly received our many services or are descended from an immigrant the Institute helped settle in Metro Detroit and/or become a U.S. citizen. We are forming a planning committee. Some of the ideas so far include:

  • Design a logo for the centennial
  • Prepare and submit a press release to local media to inform them of the upcoming birthday and inform them of the history and contributions of the Institute
  • Place a historical marker in front of or inside our building. For a State of Michigan historical marker, it is necessary to apply for historic designation, be approved, and we then will be required to pay for the marker. The price ranges from $2000 – $4000, depending on size and style.
  • Have a mural painted on our brick west wall depicting the success of Metro Detroit immigrants or an international theme. This would require approval from the City of Detroit that may or may not be granted. Unless an artist is willing to work for free, we would need to pay the artist fee and costs for surface preparation, scaffolding, and paint.
  • Have a celebration party with ethnic music and dance groups performing. Institute supporters and dignataries would be invited. International cuisine would be served.

If you have any ideas you would like to submit or if you would like to volunteer to be a member of the planning committee and/or make a financial contribution, please contact our Executive Director, Mr. Wojciech Zolnowski, at:
