Center for Excellence
Immigrant Resource Center
Description of Primary Services
Broadly defined, the IRC offers a multi-level pathway to success and self-sufficiency for Metro Detroit immigrants and City of Detroit non-immigrants through a HUD grant. It assists both with job assistance and employability skills, offering a vision of revitalized Metro Detroit and cementing this region as a destination city and new home of immigrants. The Center provides all the necessary educational services that foster self-sufficiency and empower the immigrant population to navigate the resources available to them. More specifically, the Center offers the following core services that continuously move participants from crisis towards self-sufficiency and success.
Career Development & Job Placement
Our Career Development Department provides individual one-on-one counseling, evaluation, career development and employment assistance to low-income, foreign-born and non-immigrant Detroit residents. Our career counselors and volunteers provide access to education and accreditation that oftentimes result in job referrals.
ESL & GED Services
The Education Department offers year-round ESL and GED courses in the classrooms of the IIMD. IIMD works closely with the Detroit Public Schools and other Metro Detroit school districts by offering tutoring and educational services for those learners of English as a foreign language. Our methods are both tried and tested and we consistently receive positive reviews from all participants.
Through our vocational program, the IIMD offers 3 core-competency areas: carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. Foreign-born, and American-born residents with low skills are trained by certified master instructors and receive certificates in their respective trade programs.
